How Sorbitol in Prune Juice works

Prunes are a rich source of fibre and so can make a valuable contribution to a balanced diet.
A diet high in fibre is well recognised for a healthy bowel. In addition to fibre, prunes naturally contain a high level of a helpful, sugar-like compound called sorbitol. Prune juice also contains sorbitol.

Sorbitol is very similar to glucose, but unlike glucose, it is very slowly absorbed into the blood. As a consequence of this slow absorption as it passes through the gut, the sorbitol tends to hold onto some water. This then increases the moisture content of the stools. So, both the fibre content and the sorbitol content of prunes aid in softening stools.

How does it work?

During the juicing process, the fibre is removed from prune juice, however, sorbitol remains in the juice.

Why Sunsweet Prune Juice?

Sunsweet use only the ripest and best quality plums for their prune juice. Research has shown that the quality of the plum at the point of harvest effects the levels of sorbitol naturally found in the fruit. Due to the high quality nature of the Sunsweet prune juice, less juice would need to be consumed for the same amount of sorbitol compared to other prune juice products. Coupled with a 14 day shelf life Sunsweet offers a value for money, high quality product.
